Executive Functioning Self-Test

This short self-test explores five core areas of executive functioning: attention and focus, organisation and planning, mental flexibility, emotional regulation, and impulse control.

Attention and Focus

This section looks at distractibility, staying with tasks, listening, and keeping your attention on the right thing.

1. I tend to be easily distracted when activities are happening around me.
2. I struggle to finish work or study tasks.
3. My attention wanders easily when I am working or studying.
4. I get distracted and lose focus when I hear noises or see things in my environment.
5. Novelty is nearly impossible for me to ignore.
6. It is hard for me to listen to what people say to me.

8. I get lost in thought or daydreams while reading or doing similar tasks.
9. I tend to focus on the wrong things.

Organisation and Planning

This section looks at planning ahead, time estimation, getting started, keeping track of things, and reducing overwhelm.

11. My estimate of how long it takes to do a task or go somewhere is often wrong.
12. Organising tasks and activities is very difficult.
13. I often lose important items I need for work or other tasks.
14. I never plan ahead.

Mental Flexibility

This section looks at shifting perspective, handling complexity, generating options, and adapting your thinking.

23. It is hard for me to recognise alternate options in most situations.
24. I lack self-confidence, even in tasks I am good at.

29. I decide on outcomes without proof and then stick to my conclusions.

Emotional Regulation

This section looks at irritability, frustration, emotional consistency, and how hard it is to settle once activated.

Impulse Control

This section looks at blurting, interrupting, switching abruptly, acting before thinking, and struggling to hold back.
